Self-adhesive ionomers for durable low-temperature anion exchange membrane electrolysis

Low-temperature water electrolysis using an anion conductive polymer electrolyte has several potential advantages over other technologies, however, the fabrication of durable alkaline electrodes remains a challenge. Detachment catalysts results in loss electrochemical surface area. Simple mixtures ionomer and catalyst can suffer from poor adhesion because only physical is used to bind components together. A family chemically bonded, self-adherent, hydroxide conducting ionomers were synthesized tested under conditions with nickel ferrite anode electrocatalysts platinum-nickel cathode catalyst. The are based on poly(norbornene) polymers as solid fuel cells electrolyzers. terpolymer have been functionalized provide pendant sites for covalent chemical bonding bis(phenyl)-A-diglycidyl ether ionomer, catalyst, porous transport layer. show excellent between particles, layer determined by measurements performance. AEM electrolyzer had stable voltage performance high current density (1 A/cm2 at 1.83 V (67% efficiency)) extended time periods (>600 h) without degradation.
